I still remember this afternoon so clearly. It was one of those rare pockets of time during the pandemic when the world felt just a little more open. Travel restrictions had eased. The sun came out. We took a spontaneous little trip over the border into Alsace. No big production — just a camera in my hand and a dear family I have photographed for years now. Over time, they have become real friends.
We wandered the cobbled lanes of Riquewihr for their family photos in Alsace; an idillic backdrop!
These kinds of sessions remind me why I love what I do. I work alone, but I am never really alone. The people I photograph often become part of my story, too.
The kids are so much bigger now. (How does that happen so fast?) And while there is a twinge of sadness that this version of them is already gone, I feel lucky to have been there to press pause for a moment.

Family Photography in Riquewihr – What to Expect
Not many people know I offer family photoshoots in Alsace, but it is actually a very easy trip from Basel. Riquewihr — the village pictured here — is just one hour away door to door. No fancy planning needed, just a car and a sense of adventure. The villages I tend to photograph in — Riquewihr, Eguisheim, Colmar, and Kaysersberg — are only accessible by car and are hugely popular, especially on weekends.
To get the best results:
- I recommend midweek sessions wherever possible to avoid heavy foot traffic and tour groups.
- If you’re hoping for photos during the Alsace Christmas Market season, you should know: unless we shoot at first light on a weekday, there is not a snowball’s chance on the sun we will get those quiet, picturesque backdrops. It is one of the busiest times of year — and with good reason. It is magic, but it is packed.

Family Photos in Riquewihr and Beyond — Why These Villages Just Work
Alsace is straight out of a storybook — winding cobbled lanes, colourful half-timbered houses, vineyards that wrap around the hilltops, and tiny shopfronts that look like they belong in a fairy tale. It is beautiful — but not in a staged, overly polished way. There is grit and history in those streets. It is a place where kids can climb, run, and explore. And it photographs like a dream.
I love photographing families in Alsace because it combines the adventure of travel with the comfort of connection. You get to wander and play, but also tuck yourselves into moments that feel personal and real — not just posed.
Thinking of Booking a Family Session in Alsace?
Here is what you should know:

- Sessions are personalised from the ground up — I help with timing, clothing suggestions, and location choices based on your energy (and that of your kids).
- I work with the light, the setting, and the moment — no forced smiles, no awkward posing, just beautiful memories captured in a truly special place.
