A Late Winter Family Photography Session Near Lucerne
At the end of March, before the trees turned fully green again and while there was still a dusting of snow sitting on the mountains, I photographed this Lucerne family photo session just outside the city overlooking Lake Lucerne.
This particular location had actually been on my radar for quite some time. I spent an embarrassing number of hours zooming around Google Maps trying to track it down properly after spotting it online, and eventually managed to piece together exactly where it was.
And if you are not a photographer, you might not realise that locations are often considered part of a photographer’s intellectual property in a way. Not because anybody “owns” a mountain or a public walking trail, but because a huge amount of time can go into researching, testing, and figuring out places that work well for clients.
Some photographers are very open with sharing locations, and many of mine are fairly obvious and well-known anyway, but as a general rule, I would never directly ask another photographer to hand over one of their carefully researched spots. That groundwork is part of the job.
So I was actually quite proud of myself for eventually figuring this one out on my own.

Finding the Right Photography Locations in Switzerland
And while it photographed beautifully in the right light, it also reminded me why finding a good location for Lucerne family photos is about far more than simply finding somewhere pretty online.
What this spot absolutely has going for it is convenience. It is relatively close to Lucerne city, offers a good amount of parking nearby, and has beautiful sweeping views over Lake Lucerne and out towards the Alps.
Personally, if I am aiming for dramatic alpine scenery, I usually prefer to be physically closer to the mountains themselves. But not every family visiting Switzerland wants an all-day mountain excursion involving trains, gondolas, multiple connections, and the logistics that come with travelling through the Alps with children.
For families staying around Lucerne, this kind of location can make a lot of sense.

Why Accessibility Matters for Family Sessions
That said, this location also reminded me why I think so carefully about recommending places for family photos in Switzerland.
It is not directly beside public transport and requires a fairly steady uphill walk to reach. For adults travelling light, that may not sound like much, but once you add younger children, winter jackets, backpacks, snacks, and tired little legs into the equation, it becomes a different experience entirely.
The terrain itself was also slightly narrower and less open than I would usually choose for younger children. Completely safe, of course, but I tend to favour locations where families can move naturally without parents feeling like they need to hover every second.
And finally, the surrounding area felt slightly more urbanised than I personally prefer for my Lucerne family photo sessions. Not in the charming “Swiss town” sort of way, but enough that it interrupted the immersive mountain feeling many families are hoping for when they imagine family photos in Switzerland.

A Bittersweet Lucerne Family Photography Session
But for this particular session, it actually worked perfectly.
Not only are these clients, but they are also dear friends of mine, and they have recently announced they will soon be leaving Switzerland for a new adventure in Japan. It felt like exactly the right moment to document this chapter of their lives here before everything changes again.
There was something really lovely about photographing them with these soft late-winter views over central Switzerland. The mountains still carried snow, the trees had not yet turned green, and the quieter season around Lucerne gave the whole session a calm atmosphere that can be difficult to find once spring and summer crowds arrive.
The children handled the chilly temperatures and uphill walk far better than many adults probably would have, and once we settled into the session, everything felt relaxed and easy.

Why Late Winter Can Be a Beautiful Time for Lucerne Family Photos
This session was also a reminder that not every location needs to become one of my top recommendations to still be exactly right for the people standing in it.
Because ultimately, choosing a location for Lucerne family photos is never just about the backdrop. It is about accessibility, energy levels, logistics, comfort, seasonality, and making sure the overall experience actually works for the family in front of me.
And honestly, that is often the difference between a location that simply looks good online and one that genuinely works in real life.
