Day Tripping to Emmental, Switzerland

It’s school holidays time here, which means I have time to fill with my kiddos! I decided one way to do this was to visit Emmental, Switzerland with my boys for an afternoon. It had been a while since we had last been, but I remembered the trip was A) very easy to do from Basel, Bern and anywhere in-between and B) it’s cheese y’all!

From Basel, Emmental is a quick 1 hr 15 min drive from door to door. Leaving the highway near Kirchberg, the drive is easy to do and easy on the eye. As you meander through Bergdorf and up through the rolling pastures and farms beyond, you will be fighting the urge to pull over for pictures around every bend. There are plenty of Hof-läden’s offering seasonal goodies along the way too.

Emmental is a cyclists dream. You will find yourself sharing the narrow roads with both road and leisure cyclists. If you’re planning on cycling the region you are able to rent e-bikes from the Bergdorf Bahnhof easily enough and the region often runs promotions to do just this.

Our final destination was the Emmentaler Schaukaeserei which is the perfect way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. Which is exactly what we did. My kids played for hours at the playground, particularly delighted by the giant hamster wheel. We also had a peek inside the show dairy where we watched the cheesemaker make mozzarella over an open fire. We took a picnic with us to enjoy in the sun, but there is a wonderful restaurant on site for those looking for a sit down lunch (and possibly a beer or two to enjoy with it!).

Needless to say, I highly recommend a visit to this lovely little region in Switzerland. It’s a true delight and perfect for an easy Sunday out with the whole family.
